Expanding beyond its existing customer base -- comprised heavily of Chinese and second tier handset makers -- MediaTek has recently won business from Taiwanese mobile phone producers. The award of orders from Asus and Compal, which have been customers of chipmakers Infineon and TI, respectively, is a major breakthrough for MediaTek, a late entrant to the handset IC space. The company is looking to replicate its successes in the DVD player IC segment, where it successfully pushed out Japanese incumbent chip suppliers within a few short years.
